Nanotechnology-based engine oil is known to have fuel consumption benefits of up to 5%. This technology also has positive effects on acceleration, reduced exhaust fumes, and extended engine component life. These advantages therefore significantly exceed those of ordinary diesel engine oils.

Certain fleet operators, transport managers, and workshop managers are becoming aware that advanced diesel engine oil that contains nanosized particles is of overall benefit to them. This is irrespective of the grade of oil in use and the benefits are apparent in both monograde and multigrade lubricants and ideal for long-distance heavy-duty vehicles.

The operating principle and chemistry are based on nanometer-sized particles in the lubricant creating an oil film between the piston and cylinder as if the engine’s parts are coated by a new layer. This advanced-formula engine oil reduces the friction that normally occurs between the piston and cylinder and thereby reducing energy consumption in the engine.

Within South Africa, this type of nanotechnology lubricants has not been in prominent use, due to non-availability and insufficient marketing of the above benefits. Fortunately, this scenario has changed, and suitable products can now be locally sourced.
